Couch Potato

Did y'all hear about Suresh Joachim who broke the Guinness world record for the longest time spent watching TV? Well, he achieved this Friday with 69 hours and 48 minutes of viewing time. After passing the previous record of 50 hours and 7 minutes Thursday, Joachim continued until shortly after 7 a.m. Friday morning (ET).

Joachim did his TV viewing in the lobby of WABC-TV as part of the "Guinness World Record Breaker Week" on the syndicated Live With Regis and Kelly.

Sitting on a brown leather couch, he watched nothing but ABC shows.

"I'm going to be a little tired of watching TV after this," Joachim told The Associated Press by phone during a brief break.

Rules for the couch potato honor, as stipulated by Guinness, allow for a 5-minute break every hour and a 15-minute break every 8 hours. The viewer must otherwise be constantly looking at the screen.

The hardest part, Joachim said on Regis and Kelly, was "I couldn't watch the people" — the many, waving passersby on the street outside the ABC studio.

Joachim, who lives in Toronto but hails from Sri Lanka, now holds more than 16 Guinness records, including the longest duration balancing on one foot (76 hours, 40 minutes) and bowling for 100 hours. He does it, he says, to raise awareness of suffering children.

Is it just me or don't some of these records seem really ridiculous?Nobody should be forced to watch ABC nonstop-talk about torture. Anyway, for all those of us who love television we can now point to Mr Suresh when people question our viewing habits. But,I really don't see how doing these things raise awareness of suffering children. Its more a case of Mr Man drawing attention to himself and trying to look less egotistic. What y'all think?

Comments:
got to be a better way to raise awareness

MOst of these records that people set and break are totally useless...yuh wonder why they do it. The fun of it and the competition I suppose.

How does it raise awareness of anything but the record breakers' feat?

As JDid says there has to be more effective way.

Raatid, I beat dat record long time ago!
Chat bout!

I bet dat dey is much more people out dey dat brek dat record long time...but wha kinda awarness he trying tuh raise..what's the point.

Earlier this week, Barbados was trying to make the Guiness Records of laying a mile long worth of Silver dollars. unfortunately they missed it by about 100 yrds, but managed to raise over BDS$70,000 for some charaties throughout the island

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Depends what he does with the attention he gets...even though he certainly wouldn't have mine.

Okay, maybe he'll raise awareness of AIDS in Africa by setting the record for the longest time spent while dead. I can't wait for him to start.

thats crazy. that man has 2 much time on his hands. i cant imagine watching tv for that long.

Craziness! TV? Jeesh! He needs to revamp the plan.
