Blog Etiquette
Assuming you are prone to be idle as me then at some point you would wonder what constitutes blogging etiquette. For example:
1.Is it impolite not to link (blogroll) those who have linked you?
2.If someone visits your site and leaves a comment-do you return the visit and do same?
3.On the other hand is it polite to lurk and not leave a comment? Ps,we wanna hear from you.
4.Is it rude to disable comments?
5.Should one try not to offend in the comments box?NB,not saying there should not be dissent
6.Are things like spell check, grammar and punctuation a big deal?
7.How often should you update?

Interesting questions... About the only thing I would say is don't be rude to the blogger whose site you are commenting on. Disagree if you want but don't curse, insult, etc. If you don't like what he/she has said, vote with your computer.... just don't go back.
That said, if its the blogger who disses you, do whatevah you feel like!

1. No, not unless there was an understanding that it was supposed to be reciprocal.
2. I try, but it's not always possible or desirable. If the comment was unpleasant in tone I just ignore it.
3. I don't think it's necessarily impolite. If you have nothing to say, you have nothing to say. However, if you are repeat lurker, you could at least say that you're a repeat lurker.
4. No, your blog is your blog, but disabling comments may discourage visits.
5. Don't say anything in a comment tool you wouldn't say in person and remember that, without non-verbal clues, some things don't translate well over the net.
6. Yes! Creative license only goes so far and someone has to read the bloody post.
7. That all depends on content; but blog readers are fickle, so if there are long gaps between posts you might want to put up a 'sticky' saying so.

I think its all subjective. I try to visit people who leave comments in my blog, but only if I have time. I try not to make it an obligation. I normally link to the blogs I like, which from my blogroll you can tell is a lot of folksies. Disabling comments is good if you are just getting the feel for blogging. Everybody doesn't blog to receive comments, some just want to clear their heads. The goal should be to just have fun. Now I'm going to blogroll you just because of this question. I think its very thought-provoking.
1.Is it impolite not to link (blogroll) those who have linked you?
No. Sometimes it's just that to add a link is tedious. Also, if I don't go on a particular site regularly, I don't blogroll it.
2.If someone visits your site and leaves a comment-do you return the visit and do same?
I will go to the person's site, just to make sure is not a fraud site. I will read, and as Dr D says, if I dont check for the site, I wont return. Even if I like the site, I may not necessarily make a comment.
3.On the other hand is it polite to lurk and not leave a comment? Ps,we wanna hear from you.
I lurk quite a bit. I'm not a heavy commenter. Only if I feel compelled. I read just to keep myself abreast witih what everybody is doing in their life, even though I dont know them personally.
4.Is it rude to disable comments?
Not with all them spammers around. I dont blame anybody who disables comments.
5.Should one try not to offend in the comments box?NB,not saying there should not be dissent
You can say things that maybe the blogger will not agree with, but just be respectful.
6.Are things like spell check, grammar and punctuation a big deal?
Not on a blog. But in newspaper articles, it is. On a blog, I couldnt care less, but the font must be big enough to read. A couple of the blogs I visit, the font is really small and makes it difficult to read.
Also the colour font make s adifference to how easily I ican read theh blog.
Also the paragraphing is important. I have difficulty reading too much text in one paragraph.
7.How often should you update?
Whenever you bloody well want. I remember Owen saying people kept asking him why him dont update more often. So he write it plain for everyone to see...."updated weekly"

I think there are too many rules as it is... though at the same time it's ridiculous I think to visit someone's site and then bash them. I tend to not follow blog "etiquette" because in many ways I don't know them because I have just treated blogging as a free movement. I float in and read blogs some weeks avidly every day and other weeks go an entire week without reading a single blog. As to the grammar and punctuation hahah I leave off and where it shouldn't be etc etc, I tend to just type as fast as I can and let whatever might be flow out...sorry if its hard for y'all to read it :)
I enjoy your site and am a sometimes lurker who doesn't always leave comments even though I have linked back to your site, some others I have not.
humm... so what do our answers say about our Etiquette?
