The feminist debate

This is a much talked about and debated term.It has been misused in many ways and is rejected by both men and women who see it as a tag, a label for women who they call too extreme, too assertive, too independent. There is also a certain amount of fear for some women to be called and be identified as feminists as it casts them in a tainted light.

To me feminism is about being part of a movement that seeks total equality between men and women. It calls for an integrated approach towards dealing with women's issues where men and women alike are involved in doing away with the inequalities existing in the society.I think its important for young women to learn about the movement as it offers an opportunity to learn a lot about women's rights which are essentially human rights.

Comments:
For most ppl even the highly educated feminist means man hating, lesbians who really want to be men. Females who do not want to accept their "exhalted" place as women in society and in reference to male.

One has to understand though that there is a big difference between a woman and a female. Female is your biology/sex; woman has to do with the values, status and attirbutes that your society assigns to you b/c you are female.

A feminist in my view is a woman who fight to throw off all the social ascribed attributes and that she has to observe in order to be a woman b/c these attributes, she the feminist has determined keep her subordinate to males and in position of the disadvantaged person.

Sojourner Truth knew instinctivlet that there was a distinction between a woman and a female but not exactly what it was when she asked "Aint I A Woman?". She knew for sure that woman rights issues, feminist issues were also human right issues.

Here is reconstruction of Truth's "Aint I A Woman" Speech:
"Wall, chilern, whar dar is so much racket dar must be somethin‘ out o’ kilter. I tink dat ‘twixt de niggers of de Souf and de womin at de Norf, all talkin’ 'bout rights, de white men will be in a fix pretty soon. But what’s all dis here talkin‘ ’bout?

“Dat man ober dar say dat womin needs to be helped into carriages, and lifted ober ditches, and to hab de best place everywhar. Nobody eber helps me into carriages, or ober mud-puddles, or gibs me any best place!” And raising herself to her full height, and her voice to a pitch like rolling thunder, she asked. "And a’n‘t I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! (and she bared her right arm to the shoulder, showing her tremendous muscular power). I have ploughed, and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And a’n’t I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man—when I could get it—and bear de lash as well! And a’n‘t I a woman? I have borne thirteen chilern, and seen ’em mos‘ all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me! And a’n’t I a woman?

“Den dey talks 'bout dis ting in de head; what dis dey call it?”("Intellect,“ whispered some one near.) ”Dat’s it, honey. What’s dat got to do wid womin’s rights or nigger’s rights? If my cup won’t hold but a pint, and yourn holds a quart, wouldn’t ye be mean not to let me have my little half-measure full?" And she pointed her significant finger, and sent a keen glance at the minister who had made the argument. The cheering was long and loud.

“Den dat little man in black dar, he say women can’t have as much rights as men, ‘cause Christ wan’t a woman! Whar did your Christ come from?” Rolling thunder couldn’t have stilled that crowd, as did those deep, wonderful tones, as she stood there with outstretched arms and eyes of fire. Raising her voice still louder, she repeated, “Whar did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothin’ to do wid Him.” Oh, what a rebuke that was to that little man.

Turning again to another objector, she took up the defense of Mother Eve. I can not follow her through it all. It was pointed, and witty, and solemn; eliciting at almost every sentence deafening applause; and she ended by asserting: “If de fust woman God ever made was strong enough to turn de world upside down all alone, dese women togedder (and she glanced her eye over the platform) ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again! And now dey is asking to do it, de men better let ‘em.” Long-continued cheering greeted this. “’Bleeged to ye for hearin‘ on me, and now ole Sojourner han’t got nothin’ more to say.”

I like the comment about equality.

I just had a good friend go through a divorce here in MN. It was amazing how unfair it was!

Literally - she was using drugs, with the kids around, partying, wanted to get out because she wanted to join a rock band and have time to play.

HE: systems analyst for county government, fisherman, VERY involved with kids, kept one child on proper meds for blood sugars (diabetes).

Court - Doug has job, he loses kids, he pays all, ALL.

ME: very very liberal, informed by feminist scholars and theologians

Verdict -UNFAIR- This is not what the feminist movement should have been about. Feminism shouldnt be about power reversal but about equality.

Only good feminist resource so far has been ifeminism.com. They make a strong argument that feminist power reversal is still not adequate. It is still then "granted by the state" and therefore patriarchical.

Where is it Yammy? I looked and I eh see it.

Equality sounds ok to me but from my perspective the inequality favors the women. somewhere along the line you ladies gained your equality and more. Now the men are in the position where we have to fight for our rights. Look at how the male students are doing in schools compared to females etc, look at how the laws completely favor women in divorce, Look at how women have organized and have their ready made feminist rhetoric and catchphrases to give them the ability to call any man who stands up to their movement chavaunist

Problem with the men is we arent organized, hell most of us dont even realize there is a problem so we are struggling in many areas. We make concessions sometimes willingly , other times not so, while the ladies speak about inequality in order to gain an even more stronger position on us.

Inequality can never be in women's favour when more than 50% of the world's illiterate are women and young girls. True women have made strides but there is still a long way to go and in essence it is still very much a man's world.Too many women still face gender discrimination and are exploited sexually simply because they lack the economic power to make proper decisions.

Its true Kami, women have made important strides in today's society thanks to the feminist movement. Just take a look at the porn and modeling industries and you'll see strong independent women earning 3X more money than their male counterparts. Other places where women are either equal or more dominant than men: Beer ads, models for new cars, bollywood, hollywood, lollywood...ah the list goes on and on.....

oh jesus...thandieland....yuh get yuh author's liscence yet?

I assume that you are being sarcastic anon, it’s hard to read sarcasm online, but that can only be a dig a Jdid.

Jdid are you quoting BS from a men’s magazine or the daily mail? Try and be a bit critical of them they’re not even reputable. Oh and you are not unequal when others are granted the rights that you have always had.

Boys not doing well at school is not the fault of women, if it is can you tell me how? Making sweeping statements with no sound reasoning is not a valid argument.

I know it’s distressing for you all these marginalised groups dismissing your ‘it’s natural argument’, you’ve always had the right to the best jobs, to women, to insult homosexuals and different races… I’m struggling to know what right you have lost that is worthy of retaining.

Check out some objective truths regarding eating disorders, sexual abuse, general mental wellbeing, then sit there and ask yourself why? Maybe you’ll develop some critical reasoning skills in the process.

If you think participation in pornography is sexual equality take a look at the statistic regarding porn stars. Another important question to ask yourself is, how do these depictions of women portray their role to other women and to men. sexual assault of young girls is on the rise why is this?

There are so many questions to be asked and discussed regarding female equality, think about it, ask them, listen to both sides before you dismiss female equality as an attack on your rights.
